Koi study

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had an opportunity to keep up with my blog 😦

I love painting and have not done so in about 10 years! Too much time out of the game.

Koi are my favorite subject and I decided to do a study on koi and light interactions. I prefer not to paint with a brush (palette knives, fingers, and sponges are my go to). I’ve been painting since the age of 9 and have just migrated away from them although I use them for broader applications such as background and underpainting.

On my latest piece, I decided to use dowels exclusively (think chop sticks of varying diameters) and have found that I love this technique. I am also sticking to acrylics and so far have been painting on canvas although I hope to do some on masonite.

All pieces will be displayed at my shop in Hawi.

Now for something different…Martin M-130 Flying Boat upper back piece

Finally got to finish this upper back piece today that I started a few months back. The source material for this came from a painting of a Martin M-130 flying boat aka the “Hawaiian Clipper”. He wanted to add the erupting volcano in the background which gives the piece an interesting narrative IMHO. It was his first tattoo and he sat like a champ. I had a ton of fun doing this piece. Zombie Lab, Series Two: Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio

This is the first of Series Two, Padma Lakshmi and Tom Colicchio. In S1 I painted all the pieces at once, working on 4 at one time. For S2 I have painted the base of all 9 but am going to finish them all individually. Not because I’m lazy as much as I have other projects that I am working on and also wanted to spend more time on each individual piece.
S2 is less naked women eating one another and more playful zombie action. Padma and Tom is an example of such and is timely in the sense that Anna and I had the opportunity to have dinner and drinks with Ming Tsai one Wednesday.
